Ricky Skaggs: Music to My Ears

Long awaited by country and bluegrass music fans alike, Music to my Ears is an exciting new offering from Ricky Skaggs.  Fresh, new bluegrass tunes co-written by Skaggs along with a brand new instrumental mark this CD in distinction among all the rest, while new takes on older bluegrass standards add to its charm.  This 14-time GRAMMY winning artist knows how to please all audiences with his seasoned and smooth delivery of stand-out material, as the “genius of the genre” brings his one-of-a-kind gifts to each note.

The amazing musical pairing of Ricky Skaggs and Barry Gibb (of Bee Gee’s fame & 6th best selling artists of all time) on deeply moving “Soldier’s Son” (also written by Gibb) sets this music head and shoulders apart from any others on the market today.  A stand out hit, “What You Are Waiting For” co-written by GRAMMY winning songwriter/producer Gordon Kennedy (of “Change the World” by Eric Clapton songwriting fame), has modern country appeal.  A new Christian bluegrass tune, “Music To My Ears,” showcases joyful praise with bright mandolin and fiddle.  Sure to become a bluegrass treasure “You Can’t Hurt Ham” was inspired by the infamous saying of Mr. Bill Monroe and the last track on the album, “Nothing Beats A Family” is full of heartwarming lyrics and rich harmonies, melded with superior musicianship.

Ricky says, “This album is ‘Music to my Ears’ and I hope to yours, as well!  We’ve flavored it with all of my favorite sounds and I’m excited to team up with some of the best musicians in the business to create this new record.”

14-time GRAMMY winner Ricky Skaggs is back with a full band sound, a style that made him one of the best-selling artists in Country history, on the inspired and inspirational album Mosaic on Skaggs Family Records.  Skaggs worked closely with fellow GRAMMY winner Gordon Kennedy, known for his work with Eric Clapton, Garth Brooks and Bonnie Raitt, to create an album that mixes elements of Country music with Beatles-esque melody and lyrics that speak to Skaggs' faith, making "music that is in my head and in my heart," says Skaggs.

The title track, "Mosaic" signals all to realize that no matter how small we feel sometimes, we all have a unique place in life.   "Someday Soon" opens with banjo and piano over a sturdy drum beat before kicking into a catchy chorus.  Ethereal keys, hand drums, a 12-member choir and electric guitar played by Peter Frampton kick off album standout "My Cup Runneth Over," while "Picture" has a lush sound accented by strings and hammered dulcimer. And with a clever twist on the title, "Return to Sender" includes an orchestra and background vocals by Tommy Sims.  With Mosaic, Skaggs and Kennedy take mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar and violin and mix them with percussion, a hammered dulcimer, a string section, bagpipes, a bouzouki, electric guitar, keyboards, slide guitar and more.  This album, nominated for two GRAMMY awards and one Dove award, will resonate with songs that will speak to your soul and uplift your heart.

When Hobert Skaggs’ brother and musical partner died in World War II, he vowed that if one of his children ever showed interest in music, he would teach them to how to play the mandolin.  Now, fifty years after picking up that mandolin, Ricky Skaggs celebrates the man who caused him to fall in love with music.  Esteemed for his unmistakable vocals, Skaggs raises the bar even higher serving as his own duet partner on the Monroe Brothers’ “What Is A Home Without Love” and “Sinner, You Better Get Ready” as well as Albert Brumley’s “This World Is Not My Home,” Roy Acuff’s “Branded Wherever I Go” and the classic hymn, “God Holds The Future In His Hands.”  Couple that with his unmatched instrumental expertise – Skaggs plays every instrument on the album – and you might start to think your ears are playing tricks on you!  Fiddle and clawhammer banjo are prominent, featured on instrumentals “Colonel Prentiss,” “Calloway” and Skaggs’ own “Pickin’ in Caroline.” Stirring arrangements of gospel tunes “City That Lies Foursquare” and “Green Pastures in the Sky” are signatures of a seasoned producer while classics such as “Foggy River,” “Little Maggie” and “I Had But Fifty Cents” produce images of an old fashioned front porch jam.  From a child prodigy to one of today’s musical heroes, Ricky Skaggs continues to inspire his audiences with the heritage and the history of the old time songs embedded deep in his soul by his father.  This album was nominated for both a GRAMMY award and a Dove award in the Skaggs Family Records tradition.

Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine, Ricky Skaggs’ 1981 Epic Records debut, brought renewed vitality and prominence to a sound that had been somewhat subdued by the commercialization of the Urban Cowboy fad.  Released to radio in March of 1981, “Don’t Get Above Your Raising” – ironically, a tune written by bluegrass music founding fathers, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs – became the first single to introduce a young Ricky Skaggs to a mainstream country music audience, setting a neo-traditionalist movement into motion.  In fact, renowned guitarist and producer Chet Atkins once credited Ricky with “single-handedly” saving country music.

The album not only produced chart-topping #1 singles “Crying My Heart Out Over You” and “I Don’t Care,” but resulted in Skaggs’ induction as the Grand Ole Opry’s 61st member, the youngest ever to be inducted at the time, as well as an award for New Male Vocalist of the Year from the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in 1982, respectively.  Now, more than 25 years later, Skaggs is proud to offer Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine on his own Skaggs Family Records label as the second installment in a ReIssue Series, including a bonus retrospective DVD which features Ricky Skaggs, in his own words, reminiscing about the making of this timeless masterpiece.  Skaggs’ influential country recordings paired with in-depth retrospectives are sure to become fast collector’s items!

Had it not been for 1983’s Don’t Cheat in Our Hometown, country music might never have known Ricky Skaggs as they’ve come to know and love him today. It’s a little known fact that a tape of ‘roughs’ that would become Ricky’s third venture into the country music mainstream is the music that secured his record deal in the first place. He’d been working on his second release for a smaller label when divine intervention put him on an airplane with a country music record executive. Conversation ensued, which then lead to a meeting between Skaggs and Epic Records. The rest, as they say, is history. A must-have for collectors, "Don’t Cheat in Our Hometown" is the third installment in a ReIssue Series of Ricky Skaggs’ country music treasures and includes a bonus retrospective DVD – "A Retrospective: In My Own Words After More Than 25 Years" – which features Ricky, in his own words, reminiscing about the making of what is truly one of country music’s monumental recordings.

Ricky, his wife Sharon, sister-in-law Cheryl, and father-in-law Buck each share lead vocals on the album with Skaggs' award winning band Kentucky Thunder laying the foundation for their tight family harmony.  Traditional hymns such as "Father Along", "Blessed Assurance", "Near the Cross", and "The Solid Rock" are given new life, proving that their messaes are as true toda as they were when they were written.  Familiar tunes such as "Big Wheel" and "Wreck on the Highway" (made popular by Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper), "Wings of a Dove" (made popular by Ferlin Husky), and "This Old House" (written by Stuart Hamblen) pay tribute to some of gospel music's best.  The album's five new tunes (sure to become classics) - "Love Will Be Enough", "Homesick for Heaven", "Let it Shine", "One Seed of Love" and the title track "Salt of the Earth" - are an intimate look into the heart of one of music's most beloved families.

Collectively, their musical repertoire is deeply rooted in faith, family and values.  This collection of music is no exception.  In the case of Ricky Skaggs and The Whites, the album title says it all - they are what they sing.

It took a North Carolina concert for PBS's Great Performances series to get bluegrass legends Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, and Ricky Skaggs together for the first time. It was a celebratory occasion, and this live session, supersaturated with hot licks and down-home warmth, successfully captures the excitement of the unprecedented event. For all the assembled instrumental expertise, it is the traditional vocals--with Skaggs leading the way--that makes the music work. The trio opens with the lively "Feast Here Tonight," featuring scintillating sounds from Skaggs's mandolin, Scruggs's banjo, and Watson's guitar, before taking on the high, lonesome gospel of "What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul." Each member of the trio gets feature spots for his individual band, in addition to the dozen or so songs where the three combine forces. Watson is joined by grandson Richard for a couple of country blues tunes before Scruggs, reinforced by his Family and Friends, takes over for two songs, showcasing his seminal banjo technique on "Earl's Breakdown." Skaggs and his Kentucky Thunder also take center stage for two songs, and, as if the litany of legends wasn't enough, fiddler Alison Krauss even joins the trio of principals for three songs.

Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby: Cluck Ol' Hen

Bluegrass treasures and lively expanded hits wait to be discovered on this fresh collection of songs from the masterful duo of Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby.  Both GRAMMY winners, they share stories and muse about the recordings revealed on this new album.  These exciting live recordings from their highly successful tour also include interaction with their fans.  Hornsby’s spirited piano brings a new dimension to these songs, with electrifying solos and improvisation thrown in the mix of Skaggs, Hornsby and Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder.

Without any restrictions, their music is as fascinating and masterful as the two stars that create it.  The pair blends songs drawn from deep roots in mountain music, adding piano and Hornsby's inimitable songwriting to Skaggs’ instrumental core of mandolin, guitar, bass, fiddle and banjo into a musical feast.  Of course, classic bluegrass is fully represented with three Bill Monroe tunes, including the fast and furious “Bluegrass Breakdown.”  The Washington Post declares “Hornsby's cascading solos and Skaggs's darting runs and chopped rhythms create lots of colorful contrasts.”  Punctuating this release is a vibrantly expansive version of Hornsby's early hit “The Way It Is” and a performance of “White Wheeled Limousine,” and to sum up the free-spirited nature of their collaborations, Skaggs and Hornsby joyfully present the vintage fiddle tune “Cluck Ol’ Hen.”  Skaggs and Hornsby kick up a storm with their mix of high-lonesome harmonies, full throttle bluegrass picking, and improvisational piano.

Skaggs says, “We recorded quite a few of the live performances from our tour and came up with a really great CD. It’s a great merging of two different styles.”  “To me,” Hornsby says, “it’s always been about staying inspired, broadening my reach and moving into new areas.”  Skaggs continues, “Listening to this live CD just reminded me of how much fun we had touring together, as I played music with one of the most talented people on the planet, Bruce Hornsby!  Every show was a gift.”

When six-year-old Ricky Skaggs was called up onstage to play mandolin with bluegrass master Bill Monroe near his small hometown of Cordell, Kentucky, a storied life in music began.  With Monroe as a mentor, Ricky joined the Clinch Mountain Boys and became a professional musician at age fifteen.  And when Skaggs moved into the world of mainstream country music he became a legend and a household name.

Kentucky Traveler tells the intimate stories of a career built on passion, drive, and faith in God.  Sharing tales of his influences, and fondly recalling the instruments that have shaped his sound over the years and the friendships that have shaped his life, Skaggs paints a unique insider look at the evolution of bluegrass.

AUTOGRAPHED BOOK - Kentucky Traveler: My Life In Music

**THIS HARDBACK BOOK WILL BE AUTOGRAPHED BY RICKY SKAGGS**

An honest, deeply American story of the power of faith, family, and music from one of America's most beloved bluegrass and country artists.

Unlike other farm boys growing up in the small town of Cordell, Kentucky, Ricky Skaggs learned to play the mandolin at five years old. Sure, plenty of other mountain boys plucked guitars or fiddles, or learned the old songs their grandparents taught them. But few tried and fewer still mastered the mandolin. By the time he was six years old, Ricky Skaggs's talent was clear enough that his daddy knew he had to get that boy onstage. When bluegrass master and mandolin virtuoso Bill Monroe rolled into a nearby small town, Ricky was there. As the crowd cheered, "Let little Ricky sing one!" so began a storied life in music.

With Bill Monroe as a mentor and with a family who supported him at every turn, Ricky joined the Clinch Mountain Boys band and became a professional musician at age fifteen. By twenty-one he was already considered a star in the bluegrass world. Yet, following the advice of music industry executives, Skaggs moved away from his roots into the world of mainstream country music - and in doing so, became a country legend and a household name.

Despite the hit singles, gold records, and successful tours, Ricky knew there was more to his mission. With a failed marriage and a sometimes strained relationship with his children, Ricky had to make a choice. He would follow God's plan, and rededicate his life to Christ, to his family, and to the music that made him. He would carry the torch lit by his musical heroes Ralph Stanley, Earl Scruggs, and Bill Monroe and, most important, live the life and play the music that would make his mom and dad proud. Telling the intimate stories of a successful career built on passion, drive, and faith, sharing tales of his influences, and fondly recalling the instruments that have shaped his sound over the years and the friendships that have shaped his life, Skaggs paints a unique insider look at the evolution of bluegrass.

Along with the stellar backing of his band, Kentucky Thunder, Ricky Skaggs delivers impeccable performances of Monroe's "Walls of Time", "Mighty Dark To Travel", "Boston Boy", and "I Believed In You, Darlin".
